Webcasting 101: TV on Your PC
by Kendall Callas
Thanks for joining me again on our voyage of discovery into the fast flowing waters of streaming video in the legal community. Each month we highlight examples of law firm, court, and law school “webcasts” — video over the Internet.

WHAT’S ON TONIGHT?

As demonstrated in previous columns, law schools are a goldmine of web video. This column, we look at the resources generously presented online by the Office of Career Services at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

The archive offers 28 videos in all, aimed at law students, new hires, and summer associates, but also a useful resource for HR managers, and attorneys looking to brush up on their job-hunting skills. The videos consist of lectures by placement counselors and panel discussions with attorneys and recent grads on a variety of placement and career topics, including networking, interviewing, negotiating, and career options.

If you can look beyond the occasionally garish video, annoying lighting, and speakers who wander off camera, you’ll find content of lasting value.

Here’s a selection of the topics you’ll find most useful:
  • Negotiation Workshop - 9/28/04 (51:21)
  • Networking Workshop - 9/29/04 (54:43)
  • Etiquette Dinner - 9/01/04 (1:46:53)
  • Call Back Interview Panel - 9/13/04 (50:19)
  • Fall Interview Workshop - 8/30/04 (41:32)
  • Effective Interviewing Panel - 8/31/04 (48:20)
  • Alternative Careers Panel - 3/09/04 (53:57)
  • Careers in Healthlaw - 3/02/04 (1:06:50)
  • Criminal Law Panel - Government Day, 2/21/04 (59:25)
  • Civil Law Panel - Government Day, 2/21/04 (1:02:22)
  • Regulatory/Enforcement Law Panel - Government Day, 2/21/04 (53:46)
  • How to Have a Successful Summer in a Law Firm - 3/25/03 (56:49)
The video in this archive is very friendly to dialup viewers, in fact, probably too much so. Encoded at 20 kbps, they play easily on a 56 kbps connection. But that 20 kbps is curiously low; a slightly higher speed of 38 kbps or so would still stream fine and would allow needed improvement to the visual experience.

Too many webcasts, not enough time. If you see streaming audio or video you think would be of interest to our readers, please URL and description.
