Webcasting 101: TV on Your PC
by Kendall Callas
Welcome back as we bravely charge once again into the jungle of webcasting and streaming video. Each edition, we focus on video over the Internet of interest to the legal community.

Universities often offer troves of video on the web, so this month I’ve turned my focus to the University of California and discovered a generous archive across the bay.

WHAT’S ON TONIGHT?

Visit www.UCTV.tv and click ‘video on demand’ at top right or bottom left, or go to

“University of California Television”
[play
button]http://www.UCTV.tv/ondemand

(Media player required: RealPlayer.)

This collection of webcasts presently offers over 50 videos, each about an hour. Four main categories divide the collection:

  • Health & Medicine
  • Humanities
  • Public Affairs
  • Science

The video archive covers many current topics, such as Iraq, genetics, stem cells, and pain management in women. Several videos are of particular interest to legal viewers:

  • The Health & Medicine category offers -
Stem Cells: Promise and Peril in Regenerative Medicine - Stem Cells and the Law (panel of experts), 49 minutes; 10/30/2006

The Public Affairs category offers a series of recent talks-

  • Sexual Orientation Law 2006: California, 58 minutes; 10/9/2006
  • Sexual Orientation Law 2006: Kathleen Sullivan, 27 minutes; 10/2/2006
  • Sexual Orientation Law 2006: Kenji Yoshino, 28 minutes; 10/23/2006
  • Sexual Orientation Law 2006: Public Opinion and LGBT Rights, 49 minutes; 10/16/2006

Only the latest webcasts are listed (since August 2006). You may easily mine the entire archive of over 500 videos (going back to 2000); type a word into the search box at left then click the “submit” button to search by title or keyword.

Too many webcasts, not enough time. If you see streaming audio or video you think would be of interest to our readers, please URL and description.
